AEO, GEO, and ACO: A Practical Guide for Commerce Teams

What do AEO, GEO, and ACO mean for a commerce team?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) describe overlapping work on how information appears in AI answers. ACO (Agentic Commerce Optimization) brings the shopping decision into that work: can a customer or agent understand the right product, check the buying conditions, and move toward a purchase?

For a commerce team, the useful starting point is the buyer’s question. A product can be mentioned in an answer while the size, delivery destination, or available variant is still unclear. Improving that information gives the next customer a more complete answer, whether the visit comes from search, an AI assistant, or an ad.

Compare the questions each term helps you ask

The boundaries between these terms vary by author and platform. The comparison below describes how we use them in commerce work; it is not a set of three independent ranking systems or a mandatory sequence.

The GEO research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues studies visibility within generated answers. In practice, much of the evidence, writing, and measurement work used for GEO also supports AEO.

Keep the search foundations in place

Google says its AI search features use the same SEO foundations: accessible pages, helpful text, internal links, and structured data that matches what people can see. It does not require a special AI text file or an additional schema type for those features.

Treat those foundations as part of the publishing process. Then look at the actual answers to your buyer questions. A technically accessible page still needs relevant evidence before it can be useful in a shopping conversation.

Use the 5Cs as a practical review framework

Max Sinclair describes ACO through five Cs in his September 2026 TechRadar Pro opinion article. The following checklist applies that framework to AEKO’s commerce workflow.

Our running example is a fictional commuter backpack. Assume its product sheet specifies an 18-litre capacity, a compartment for a 14-inch laptop, and water-resistant fabric. A customer review describes carrying a laptop and umbrella to work.

5C framework: Max Sinclair, TechRadar Pro, September 7, 2026

Completeness: make the product comparable

Start with what someone needs to choose the correct item. In the backpack example, the laptop-compartment dimensions matter more than a generic claim that the bag is ideal for work. Each variant also needs its own current price, availability, and applicable delivery and return conditions.

Check that the store page, product feed, and any republished page agree. Google’s Product documentation is a useful reference for representing product and offer information in structured data. The markup should describe the visible page, including the product and variant actually offered.

  • Confirm the product and variant identifiers before reusing a brief.
  • Write important attributes in readable page text.
  • Record missing information as a task for the product owner; do not ask AI to invent it.

Context: connect the facts to a buying situation

The review suggests a situation worth investigating: a commute with a laptop and umbrella. A candidate question might be, “What should I look for in a backpack for a 14-inch laptop and a rainy commute?” The product sheet supplies the facts that the answer can safely use.

Keep the original review linked to that context. One person’s experience does not establish that a bag is waterproof or that every commuter will find it comfortable. In AEKO, review context can inform prompt research, a content brief, and an ad brief while remaining tied to the relevant product.

Choose which questions to track based on product fit, buyer intent, and the gaps you want to investigate. A generated question is a research candidate; it is not evidence of how many customers ask it.

Citations: inspect the answer and its sources

Track the question with a recorded engine, country, language, and date. Read how your product and competitors are described, then open the cited pages. A competitor’s comparison guide may answer a practical question that your own product page leaves open.

Use that finding to choose the next piece of content. For the backpack, a useful guide could explain how to check laptop fit and compare water resistance with waterproofing, using verified product evidence. Keep the published URL so you can check whether it is cited in later answers.

Record bot visits, brand mentions, and source citations separately. An answer can mention a product without linking to its page; a crawler can fetch a page without that page appearing in an answer.

Correctness: keep the brand’s knowledge tied to evidence

Suppose a cited page calls the fictional bag waterproof, while the product sheet only supports water resistance. That difference needs review before the claim is copied into another article or ad.

Review collected source claims against selected product evidence within content work. Open the source excerpt, product facts, and review date. Evidence may need updating: absent information is not automatically false. Decide which claims or source content need correction.

Carry the reviewed distinction into the brand skill and its evaluation criteria. For example, an ad-writing skill can require the correct water-resistance wording, while an evaluation checks whether the output introduces an unsupported waterproof claim. The team should verify the evidence behind that criterion.

Customer Acquisition: measure what people actually do

Use the same buying situation to plan content and an ad test, then keep their results separate. For an AI answer, record mentions and citations with the number of answers reviewed. For an ad, inspect the impressions, clicks, CTR, CPC, and spend available from the account. Use configured analytics and conversion events to examine subsequent visits and purchases.

An ad click does not prove that an organic citation caused a sale. An observed mention rate does not estimate the chance of an ad being served. Compare equivalent dates and markets, and record changes to the question set or campaign before interpreting a result.

AEKO supports review- or brief-based ad work and marketing rules using supported metrics. The context-performance views shown on the public AI Marketing page are a preview of analysis in development. Advertising account access, targeting options, and transaction capabilities depend on the connected platform and merchant setup.

Connect the work, then expand it to the next product

In AEKO, the starting material is connected store data and reviews. Turn the customer situation into a selected tracking question, inspect competitor answers and sources, review disputed facts, and prepare the missing explanation. The same reviewed facts can support a content brief and an ad brief.

Product and review evidence supply the facts for a task. Writing formats and AI briefs describe how to produce the work; review criteria specify what to check. AEKO MCP connects supported AI clients such as Claude and Codex to AEKO data and saved plans. Start the task in your client and review its result.

Publish reviewed content through the supported AEKO Shop workflow, and verify the public page. Shop provides a place for product information and content to be read and linked; transaction support is a separate question for each commerce integration.

Once one product and market work well, reuse the method for the next product family. Recheck local variants, prices, delivery conditions, language, and customer situations. Prompt coverage depends on the plan; larger programs are scoped with Enterprise. Pro and above include connected-AI content creation without an AEKO per-content fee. AEKO Shop has separate setup and billing. External AI fees, chargeable hosted runs, and operational rate limits remain separate.

Frequently asked questions

Are AEO, GEO, and ACO separate ranking systems?

No. AEO and GEO overlap in their focus on visibility in AI answers. ACO is an emerging term for applying that work to product understanding and shopping decisions. Their definitions vary; the comparison in this guide is a working framework for commerce teams.

How do the 5Cs change a content brief?

Identify the product and variant, the customer situation, the pages or evidence that support the answer, the claims to verify, and the customer action you will measure. Use missing information in that brief to choose the next task before writing more content.

Does ACO require checkout inside an AI assistant?

You can start by improving product facts, variant selection, buying conditions, and the path to the merchant. Completing a purchase inside an assistant depends on that platform and the merchant integration. Publishing to AEKO Shop does not establish universal in-assistant checkout support.

How should a team begin?

Select one product family and one market, keep the source facts and review context, and track a small set of buyer questions. Improve a specific information gap, publish or test the relevant content, then compare answers and commercial metrics under recorded conditions.
